Solar pump NUV HOP
2019
Uganda
In Northern Uganda, south of Gulu, lies the Parak district. There are a few hand water pumps in this district, but for some of the inhabitants these are too far away. Other pumps or sources are in poor or defective condition. That is why the organization Nuv-hop asked us to find a solution for this. Nuv-hop stands for Northern Uganda Village Health Outreach Project. It is a medical development project that consists of medical students from Belgium, Manchester and Uganda. Every summer these students go to the city of Gulu to provide medical care in the area and to organize health talks. The availability of clean drinking water is of crucial importance for this project.
To solve this problem, students Severine, Michiel and Louis will install a solar pump in the summer of 2019. This solar pump will be located near the village of Burkwoyo, since the available hand pumps are the furthest away in this region. It is estimated that around four hundred residents will use it. A solar pump is a pump that works on solar energy, which means that solar panels will also be installed. In order to make our project as sustainable as possible, a water management committee will be set up in the summer, consisting of a few residents. These people will take over the management of the solar pump after our departure. In this way, a structure can be set up to finance possible repairs. The intention is that these people will be present as much as possible during our stay in order to create an optimal exchange of information.
