Solar pump
2016
Kenya
Access to drinking water in Kenya is not a given. A large part of the population relies on rare local sources of which it is not known whether the water is pure.
Agriculture in the Kisumu region could be much more sustainable. Due to the scarcity of resources combined with inefficient use, there is a shortage of water.
By building a solar pump in an educational center founded by 'Imani Belgium', the local population will learn about obtaining drinking water. The project students will demonstrate simple systems that the local population can use themselves to purify water. The installation itself will be built together with the local population, whereby theoretical and practical knowledge is continuously exchanged.
With the help of an extensive pipe system, the crops can be irrigated efficiently. The water that is not used for purification can be used for irrigation in a controlled manner.
As a third focus point of this project, the students will check the internal local power circuit together with the local users and add safety systems where necessary. This way, there is a safe use of power at times when the regional electricity grid is working.
