Water management of the Islands of Peace

2019

Peru

When we turn on our tap in front of the mirror in the morning, the water flows as if it were a given. However, this water has already travelled a long way to reach us so pure. In many parts of the world, this luxury is not available. This is also the case in the Huánuco region in Peru. Families in the mountain villages there often drink directly from the source, with little or no purification. This carries with it many health risks.

In collaboration with Islas de Paz Peru, Humasol is carrying out a three-part project on water management. In the first two parts, three project students will work on improving local drinking water quality in order to reduce water-related diseases. To this end, the problem is first determined by performing a water analysis on the current drinking water sources. The students then work out appropriate measures to optimize the water purification system. The last part concerns a study on irrigation. The current systems of local farmers in the mountain area contribute to erosion and water wastage. More efficient sprinkler systems exist, but are still not well known. By combining our theoretical knowledge with their years of experience, we hope to do something about this and work together on more economical water consumption.
