Waste Masters 1
2017
Kampala
Due to the westernization of African consumption patterns, waste production in these countries has increased enormously. In Uganda, there is a decentralized system of waste collection. However, this does not exclude the possibility of waste being dumped or set on fire. Waste Masters Ltd. is a company with a clear vision: “To have a garbage free nation, with healthy people and a pollution free city”. In order to work towards this, Chrispin Lutalo, CEO of the company, turned to Humasol. Together with him, we are looking for ways to make waste processing more sustainable.
Research shows that around 60 to 80% of waste is organic. By separating this from inorganic waste, the waste mountain is already reduced considerably. By composting the organic waste, it is given added value again. The compost can be used by the local population or local farmers, who can then literally reap the benefits. Separating these fractions can clear the way to sorting other fractions as well.
During Waste Masters 1, a test phase will be launched to allow the separation of organic and inorganic waste to take place. In addition, sufficient attention will also be paid to awareness-raising. For this purpose, we would, among other things, join forces with a number of committed teachers. Who in turn will work with their students on this issue. In addition, we will try to organize activities in collaboration with the local population, such as a Recycle Café. Finally, under the guidance of Chrispin, we will lobby the local government to also get things moving on a larger scale.
