Maintenance of micro-hydro

2017

Peru

Since 2010, Humasol has been working on small-scale hydroelectric power plants in Peru. After having built three plants, we decided together with our partners not to build a new plant this year, but to focus on the maintenance of one of the existing plants.

During heavy rainfall in 2016, part of the installation in La Playa Hermosa broke down. Some pipes that are supposed to take the water from the river were washed away, and the temporary dam that brings the water into the system does not work according to the demand of the project. We often hear about power failures in the Peruvian state grid, which still convinces us that small-scale hydropower is a good alternative. The local population has already committed to rebuilding more than half of the system. This year, two thesis students will help them, to set up a safe mechanical and electrical system. The goal of the project is to be able to provide all the farmers in the village with electricity again, so that they have light in the evening, can turn on a radio and connect a small refrigerator.
