Electricity grid for hydro
2016
Peru
In rural areas of Peru, utilities have often not yet been installed. As a result, there is no light after dark, severely hampering economic activity and development. The region where Humasol is active is mainly home to coffee farmers. With electricity, they can improve the quality of their products as well as their living conditions. In concrete terms, we will be working in the village of La Buitrera in the Chirinos district during the period 2015-2016.
In collaboration with the local government of Chirinos, Humasol is providing for the construction of a hydroelectric turbine, which will supply electricity to 20 families. Construction started in 2015 and will continue in 2016. The electricity will initially be used for lighting, but can also be used to power coffee dryers. With such dryers, farmers can increase the quality and yield of their coffee. In addition to the concrete realization of the project, Humasol strives to further spread knowledge and awareness about this renewable technology. Ideally, local people are able to use the numerous rivers themselves to generate electricity for their own use in remote locations. This is often a cheaper and more sustainable alternative than the costs and work involved in expanding the electrical grid in mountainous regions. In order to facilitate the expansion, Humasol will focus more on smaller units in the future, which are easier to install and affordable for everyone.
