Off to Kiyodel — Uganda

There we stand.

When we signed up for this project a year ago, it was with curious minds and enthusiastic hearts. Today, a year later, we're about to board a plane to Uganda — still curious, still enthusiastic, but admittedly… with a slightly trembling heart.

In just a few days, we will arrive in Kiyodel, a skilling center in Uganda that provides hands-on training for young people who haven’t had access to regular education. It’s a beautiful place with a powerful mission — but it lacks something we often take for granted: electricity.

That’s where our project begins.

Together with Humasol, Kiyodel, and four local students from MUST University and Technical College Bushenyi, we — Jasmin, Leonie, Ine and Emiel, all bioscience engineering students — will be working on designing and installing a solar photovoltaic system. This off-grid installation will give the school access to reliable electricity: light for studying, power for sewing machines and woodworking tools, outlets for charging phones and laptops, even a projector or an iron. It will bring energy, in every sense of the word.

But it’s not just about the hardware. We’ll also focus on raising awareness about energy use and recycling through workshops with the students and local community. We want to leave more than just solar panels behind — we want to share knowledge, ideas, and possibilities.

We know it won’t all be easy. There will be challenges, cultural differences, technical surprises, and probably a few sleepless nights. But right now, standing here at the edge of this new chapter, all we feel is gratitude and a deep sense of purpose.

Next stop: Kiyodel.

Let’s do this.
