Composting Goldtree

Optimize the digestion of the waste material of a palm oil company
The palm oil industry is very controversial because of his impact on the environment. We, Celine and Andreas, will try to make the production process and assimilation of this oil as organic as possible with African tools. When palm oil is organic, it’s market value is higher. We will spend our summer in Sierra Leone. This little country on the west coast of Africa has many palm tree plantations. In the Kailahun district, the company Goldtree collects all the fruits of the local farmers and assimilates them to oil. By doing this, the company takes care of the economy in the area, which had a difficult time after a civil war and the Ebola crisis.
We will try to find way to optimize the digestion of the waste material of the company. We’ll compost, re-use the waste products on the field with a fertigation-trail and we’ll try to find other possibilities for composting, together with the people of the company. Thomas, our coach, will help us as best as he can during the year in Belgium. Fertigation is an irrigation system combined with the fertilization of the fields. For this project we can implement all the knowledge we have from our education as bioscience-engineers at het KULeuven.
