The first five sensors were calibrated correctly last week, and after some fast tests they seemed to work. Now the goal is to calibrate the other 15 before I go to Lima, but this is a boring and time-consuming job. I leave on Thursday afternoon so I don’t have so much time this week, but I think I will manage to calibrate them all. I calibrated the first 5 without doing anything special, and I quickly saw there was a systematic error with different samples and sensors. This seemed to be caused by differences in the way I was filling the sensor. From the moment you put a bit more pressure on it, more beans enter which gives a different reading. After checking with Belgium they told me they already tested this last year. We choose to continue working without a balance, which is less precise but easier for the farmers. But it is really important to fill the sensor in the same way, every time. We choose to fill it till the top, without pushing it in, and this gives pretty good results. I also spent some time last week trying to upgrade the collaboration with other ONG’s. In June some of them organize a ‘technology fair’ here in Jaén, where they will show their products. Among the participants you can find the farmers, but also the different universities and the municipalities. And they asked me to talk for Humasol, off course mostly about the Humidity Sensor Project. And we will try to collaborate with Ingeniería Sin Fronteras from Spain. They need a humidity sensor for their solar dryers, and we will see how we can help them.
My wrist is still a bit rough, and some movements hurt, but I almost regained full functionality. Unfortunately for me, I think I won’t be able to surf or swim for a few more weeks.
On Friday I also got sick, and after analysing my eating patterns, I think it is because of all the paltas (avocados) I eat. They are so delicious and cheap here! Normally I would have gone to Chachapoyas on Saturday to visit Kuélap, but I delayed it till Sunday. Kuélap is the Machu Pichu of the north, without the tourists. This is what I read everywhere, and it is completely true. Like the pictures show it is a beautiful ruin, on top of a mountain at 3000m. It is still no UNESCO world heritage, but it should become part of it really soon. Contrary to Machu Pichu, it was never cleaned up, and it is still dominated by nature. This gives the place a really special atmosphere, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Peru.

De eerste vijf meters zijn vorige week succesvol gekalibreerd, en na enkele snelle tests lijken ze correct te werken. De bedoeling is nu dat ik nog voor mijn reis naar Lima de andere 15 kalibraties uitvoer, wat een tijdrovende en saaie job is. Ik vertrek donderdag middag al naar Lima en heb dus niet zo veel tijd deze week, maar ik hoop het wel voor elkaar te krijgen. Ik had de eerste vijf meters eerst gewoon gekalibreerd, maar merkte dat er een systematische fout zat bij de verschillend samples en verschillende meters. Dit bleek voor te komen bij verschillen in de vulling van de meter. Vanaf dat er iets meer druk word gezet, passen er ook meer bonen in de meter waardoor er een andere waarde wordt uitgelezen. Na overleg met België bleek dat ze dit vorig jaar al hadden getest, en hebben we gekozen om zonder weegschaal te blijven werken, wat eenvoudiger is voor de boeren. Maar het is dus wel zeer belangrijk om de meter steeds op dezelfde manier te vullen. We kozen er dus voor om te vullen zonder aan te duwen, gewoon tot boven vol, en dit geeft vrij goede resultaten. Ook de samenwerking met andere vrijwilligersorganisaties is vorige week aan bod gekomen. In juni organiseren enkelen onder hen een soort ‘technologie beurs’ in Jaén, waar de organisaties hun producten zullen tonen. Onder de andere aanwezigen kan men natuurlijk de boeren vinden, alsook de universiteiten en de gemeentes. En ze hebben mij nu gevraagd om hier ook te komen spreken voor Humasol, natuurlijk voornamelijk over onze vochtigheidsmeter. Er werd ook mondeling overeengekomen om samen te werken met Ingeniería Sin Fronteras uit Spanje, die een vochtigheidsmeter nodig hebben voor hun zonnedroger. Ik zal later met hun nog zien hoe we exact kunnen helpen.
Mijn hand is nog altijd stroef, en doet pijn bij enkele specifieke bewegingen, maar ik kan nu wel ongeveer alles doen. Surfen of zwemmen zit er vrees ik wel niet in voor de komende weken.
Ik ben dan ook ziek geworden op vrijdag, na enige reflectie over mijn eetpatroon denk ik dat ik teveel palta (avocado) heb gegeten, die is hier zo lekker en goedkoop! Normaal ging ik zaterdag al naar Chachapoyas gaan om Kuélap te bezoeken, maar dit heb ik dan uitgesteld tot zondag. Kuélap is het Machu Pichu van het noorden, zonder de toeristen. Dit is wat ik overal las en bleek helemaal waar. Zoals de foto’s tonen is het een ongelooflijk mooie ruïne, boven op een berg op 3000m. Het is geen UNESCO werelderfgoed, maar het zou dit wel snel moeten worden. Tegengesteld aan Machu Pichu is het nooit opgekuist geweest, en het is dus nog steeds ingenomen door de natuur. Dit geeft een heel speciale sfeer aan de hele plaats, en ik zou het zeker aanraden als je naar Peru trekt.
